Being able to periodically measure and report on oxygen saturation (also referred to as SpO2 or blood oxygen) statistics has been a feature of BoundaryCare since the beginning. Though the readings were not continuous and not medical-grade, they have provided many users valuable insights about general trends and evolutions in individuals’ health, well-being, and support plans.

It has been increasingly difficult to maintain access to this feature on our platform. Apple (whose hardware BoundaryCare’s platform uses) has been engaged for several years in a patent dispute with Masimo around its oxygen saturation sensing technology, and the outcomes of that dispute have made keeping on-watch SpO2 data collection available a challenge. We have continued to make it possible by relying on carefully sourced hardware, supporting this feature long after it was officially dropped by Apple (in a quirk of patent workarounds, Apple Watch’s paired phones can still access SpO2 readings – that data just can’t be viewed or accessed on the Apple Watch itself).

In May of 2026, Apple issued a system update that silently disabled our ability to read on-device SpO2 measurements on the hardware we were using. While we searched for alternatives and waited for a fix from Apple, we can now conclusively say that none are forthcoming. Therefore, new BoundaryCare kits will no longer have an SpO2 reading function. Existing BoundaryCare kits will continue to read SpO2 and report in our platform so long as the underlying system is not upgraded. Any users who upgrade by accident, or who purchased a kit after May 2026 with the intention of using the SpO2 feature, should contact our support team to discuss their options.

Updates will be rolled out across our platforms and marketing materials in the coming weeks to reflect this change. We will do our best to update and correct 3rd party information where we can, but remember that only BoundaryCare can provide the definitive, current picture of our products’ capabilities.

While we’re sad to see this feature go, setting it aside will allow us to get more flexible with the types of kits and packages we are able to offer. We hope that circumstances and technology change in the future such that we can bring this feature back to all of our users as soon as possible.

Thank you for your support and trust,

The BoundaryCare Team
